Things That Go Through My Head

(In my mind I was also yelling while doing this)

Immediately after this while enjoying our fine bathroom facilities, which you have to use a Kastle key to get into, I also decided that there needs to be a Corporate Graffiti Initiative, wherein while in the bathrooms of other companies you "get up" on their bathroom walls. Sharpie Magnums can now be found in the company supply room. PROMOTE YOUR BRAND

End User Demands

A link to this thread makes me think of the shit developers have to up with a lot. Often the stereotype is that software developers a bunch of socially retarded pretentious assholes who live solely to make our end users miserable. When you see bug reports like this you realize why we as software developers are sometimes grumpy.

This bug report also brings up something that I don't think people often understand. As it well known complexity leads to errors. For the Firefox team one must imagine the layers of complexity and breadth of knowledge needed to work on the project. Aside from needing to know C, one must also know at the very least HTML, CSS, XML and JavaScript (there is also a bunch of other technologies of which need to be aware of if not knowledgeable HTTP, SVG, RSS and this only scratches the surface) They must also have an understanding of how their changes to code may behave in regards to the other parts of the Mozilla software suite and how it may work on the various supported operating systems. Lastly the must also be conscientious of the other branches and versions of the software and their release when integrating a bug fix back into the code base.

Considering all of the effort involved above and the developers actually seeming to care about trying to fix Will's bug, he acts like a dick to those trying to help him. Finally this gets to my the larger point I want to make, especially when working with open source software. I think it should be an extension of Godwin's Law where in when some who finds a bug that isn't immediately fixed makes the claim "because of this bug I will stop using this software and I will tell my friends the same" that the conversation has now reached the logical end.

--side bar--
In the case of this bug since it happens on gmail, it seems more likely something specific to his setup as gmail is application used by many people and were it that severe would have been discovered already. Secondly he at one point seems to confuse Java and JavaScript, which only compounds the issue and makes one question his knowledge of what is actually going on.

Bush Tax "Rebate"

There has been lots of discussion lately on the proposed plan by Bush for a tax rebate, this is almost always is also mentioned with "tax relief for small business"
I'd like to make a few comments on the matter.
First, of anyone who is worth their salt is more than aware that trickle down economics don't do much but help the already wealthy.
Second, this rebate always mentions small business tax changes, what isn't mentioned is that small businesses are often used by the wealthy for tax breaks.
Third, the small businesses and hard working Americans that are romanticized when the rebate is mentioned are least likely to benefit.
Fourth, this is political move more than anything else. If blocked it will be used to say "See the Democrat majority thinks they know better what to do with your money" when in reality it is more likely wasn't going into your pocket and is great way to cut things that are needed like health care for poor children by removing a lot of money from the budget. If it is passed and the Democrats get the White House and maintain the majority they will suffer the ramifications.
Fifth, and this is the only part of this post that might be reaching a bit, is that the Democrats have been mopping the floor with the Republicans in raising election money and this could be scene as bribe during an election year to get more money in Republican coffers. I wonder when we'll see the encouragement of using the rebate to support your local Republican candidate.

Update:
I saw this quote on a Freakonomics blog post:
and I find it fitting

The types of crimes linked to this theory should be specified. I doubt white collar crime has dropped as a result of the legalization of abortions. As the effects of white collar crime on every aspect of American life is constantly downplayed, I suspect the argument would be less appealing to people if you defined which types of crimes were affected and what portion of the negative effects crime has on the quality of life is really reduced.

and while I'm at it

Dear Rich People …

I'm willing to bet those most in favor of "fair" but not just form of tax changes are those most able to actually pay more to do their fair share.

Fuck Jesus

This is in response to the American Family Ass action alert

I'm loathe to link to them but it is worth it.

Oh and Jesus, if you take issue with the me saying FUCK JESUS, just shoot me an email to setup a time to meet for happy hour and if you can prove you are really the son of God and came back from the dead around 2000 years ago, I'll take this post down. For someone as powerful as the son of God you sure don't seem to be able to defend your name very well.

It's Been a Long Time*

Dear Loyal DC Dan fans,

Sorry about the lax in service lately. I had a couple of weeks off. My bedroom is insanely clean. I've started a new job, with a company that I again will neglect to mention, but so far so good a fun group to work with, nice office space and commute and interesting and challenging work. [Not sure if they did enough Google research to find this persona or not, but they can give me a wink at the office tomorrow if they do.] I've gotten my poker skills back, I'm back on a winning streak. The Packers are likely going to go to the Super Bowl this year. The Lakers beat the Super Sonics**

It looks like a good year is coming up for DC Dan.

later,
DC Dan
