Standing in the Shower...Thinking

This link about God telling someone to beat their kids, made me think of a Jane's Addiction song. Also see this

To quote Jane's Addiction
---------------------
Standing in the shower thinking
About what makes a man
An outlaw or a leader
I'm thinking about power...
The ways a man could use it
Or be destroyed by it
The water hits my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing
In the shower
Thinking...

Standing in the shower thinking
About a man I know don't like me
He don't like the place I'm headed
Same place he's headed...
I know he'd beat me to it
If he could but he won't do it
But he would man
If he could...
And the water is piping hot..
The water is piping hot
It beats upon my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing
In the shower
Thinking...

Standing in the shower thinking
Is my woman afraid of me?
She's seen how far I've twisted
It's just cause I can trust her
And ever since we met
She understood so she let
Me twist her good...
I twist her good...
And the water is piping hot
The water is piping hot
It beats upon my neck
And I'm pissing on myself...

Standing
In the shower
Thinking...

Be a Mensch

I often remember hearing from my dad as a child (and still today) to act like a mensch
Today inline with my latest fascination with Yiddish, I checked out what the web had to say about being a mensch. I came across an entry on Guy Kawasaki's blog titled How to Be a Mensch and I really like how he articulates it and it is very much inline with my world view. Here are the five bullet points but please read the whole post to get the details.

  1. Help people who cannot help you.

  2. Help without the expectation of return.

  3. Help many people.

  4. Do the right thing the right way.

  5. Pay back society.

I also think this can be trimmed down to on line, though the vision isn't quite as clear.

FTC Thanks for Nothing

Dear FTC,

I know keeping up with the FCC on ruining the Internet isn't an easy task, so I offer you my congratulations. You've successfully fundamentally misunderstood the potential problem and while you promise to monitor the the situation for problems in the future. The telcos will easily find their way around it.

Sincerely,
DC Dan

PS For my non-nerd loyal readers FTC shoots down Net Neutrality, says it is not needed and if you want an explanation of what "Net Neutrality" is ask me and I'll give you the 411.

FCC Please Stop

Dear FCC,

Please ensure network neutrality and stop fucking with the way the Internet was meant to work, perhaps we should return to old days when most sites ended with .edu and .com's weren't allowed to sell anything. Sigh.

Sincerely,
DC Dan

Bad Habit

Working from home 99% of the time, I've picked up a bad habit that will make me a bad office mate in the future. I've started singing along with the songs I'm listening to.*

Apologies to Catherine for finishing a sentence with a preposition.

Because I Smile and Say Hi to People on the Street

On of the things that I like about living on the Hill is that people you pass on the street smile and greet you when they pass as such I'm glad to find you that today is Celebrate the Power of a Smile Day

Ignorance Follows Not Only Party Line but Religious Ones

Religion—our maelstrom of ignorance

This leads me to often heard "you can't prove there is no god" argument I hear from the faithful; and you know what you are right I can't and I don't claim to, but you can't even come fucking close to proving there is a god, the burden is on you to prove that "He" exists.

Look at it this way, if I told you that eating ice cream made people healthy and would build classical greek olympian bodies you'd ask me to prove it right?
Or if told you that your significant other was cheating on you, you would ask me to prove they were, no? And not take the "you can't prove they aren't" route would you?

So starting with no belief, prove to me that Jesus, Allah or Buddha is right.
If you can you've got a follower but I'm not going on faith, I need evidence.
I want something that proves it is right and I'm going to tell you right now, the Bible, the Torah, the Koran and the Siddhartha Gautama is so full of holes that they can't count as evidence.
and if you tell me that "I need faith and it comforts me", my response is "Fine by me, but you're living in denial and suppressing rage, motherfucker! "

later,
dc dan

Ajax as the iPhone SDK

As anyone who has written apps for phones will tell you, it is big ole pain in the ass and you often have to use a bunch of proprietary software and hope that they work on all kinds of different models of phone and then you'll likely have to do it again for when you want to support another brand of phone. Using Ajax means you've already got a bunch of developers who already know the environment, the language and platform.
It was also a good excuse to port Safari to Windows and has the following bonus reasons.

  • iTunes IS the music app, they will get some "halo effect users" and Windows kids can now pretend to be cool like their Mac friends

  • Windows shops can now test their site for Safari compatibility and not have to have a Mac laying around

  • Send a big fuck you to Microsoft who gave up support of IE for Mac not too long ago

I think it was a pretty damn good idea.

Pope Powers

Scare as man tries to board popemobile
• Man vaults security barriers and tries to climb onboard popemobile in Vatican City
• Security guards wrestle the man to the ground and arrest him

I read this on CNN.com and the first thought that came to mind is why does the Pope need security? Doesn't he have the power of God behind him? Shouldn't that be enough?

Who Knew

Evangelical teens are actually more likely to have lost their virginity than either mainline Protestants or Catholics. They tend to lose their virginity at a slightly younger age — 16.3, compared with 16.7 for the other two faiths. And they are much more likely to have had three or more sexual partners by age 17: Regnerus reports that 13.7 percent of evangelicals have, compared with 8.9 percent for mainline Protestants.

Evangelicals are easy!
