Gouging Customers Works!

So this is how Exxon Mobile (ESSO) has the money to buy enough Senators to start Operation Enduring Drilling, dammit they beat me to it.

From my old defunct blog on 10/4/2004:
I'm Looking For a Few Hearty Souls
I'm going to take advantage of the next four years and I'm going to start operation "Enduring Drilling" (I was going to name it operation Drill the Fuck Out of Alaska, but it didn't test well with the Amish) to help liberate the oil from Alaska, I've been looking for drill equipment on eBay, and I'll need some people to start my company I'd prefer that the people have experience living in cold weather so this should appeal to the people from the upper midwest. Please apply as a soon as possible as once I get the equipment from eBay, I'm going to purchase a Humvee, gotta support my industry, and start my trek picking up people on the way. If anyone who's dad can put them in an executive position at a real company (finding oil is optional) your help would be really appreciated and who knows you may be president some day. Also I'm looking for naming ideas.

Why Flickr for Video Won't Work

I recently read a post on BoingBoing about a Flickr for video. While it may sound new fresh and exciting I simply don't think it will work. Why you ask? Because watching a video demands too much attention and too much of your time. When I look at someone's Flickr stream I can quickly decide if I like their photos, if I look at someone's blog I can scan some posts (quickly) and decide if I should add them to my RSS reader. This breaks down a bit when it comes to podcasts, as getting them is now pretty easy and you can listen to them on your commute or in the background while tending to other tasks. Podcasts have their weakness, you can't click on links while listening* to them and you cannot scan through them quickly. When it comes to video though the investment is just too high. It involves BOTH listening and watching and to make matters worse it demands a LOT of time, looking over twenty blogs doesn't take very long, watching a three minute video post from twenty blogs takes an hour, an hour that is purely focused on the video and cannot be a background activity, nor easily done while commuting. Then to make matters worse you will often spend a lot of time watching uninteresting video of mundane things, a lot of effort goes into making videos worthwhile to watch do you think the average "videocaster" is going to take the time do it properly, look at the number of typos and atrocious grammar that exists in blogs, video will only exacerbate this. So while it may be an interesting proposal, I just don't see video taking off in this manner. Unless it is Flickr (picture and video) for porn that might pique interest...

* A cool Growl (or any other method for that matter) plugin, would be one that while listening to the podcast would pop up something you click on to get background info when the podcaster mentions something that would be linked in a normal podcast.

team*josh as you can see the challenge was for
"team*josh will be able to drink more beer at thier Schluetertoberfest than TEAM*JESS at their Schluetertoberfest."
TEAM*JESS drank 138 beers and there were NO LIGHT BEERS ALLOWED.

The challenge was not for beers per person, additionally I didn't include the shots that were taken.

team*josh drank 47 beers

138 is more than 47 so TEAM*JESS actually won on the initial challenge.

As for the hotness factor really?
No one even has their pants off
nor do you have any up shirt shots
or down shirts shots

Halloween Costume Idea

I've just come up with a great Halloween costume idea, get some suits, some handcuffs, some ankle braclets and name tags of the leadership of the Republican party and masks if they are available and go as the "The real reason the US spends more on incarceration than education"

Responsible Handwashing

A very smart friend of mine, while getting her PhD in Molecular Biophysics, used to warn me of the danger of washing your hands with anti-bacterial soap, claiming that you were only helping to ensure more resistant strains in the future and that if you wanted to be bacteria free you should wash your hands with bleach. Well the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee agrees while also stating that anti-bacterial soap doesn't make for cleaner hands. So the short story is just use Ivory.

As If You Needed Another Reason to Hate Starbucks

There are the usual reasons:
*They are on every fucking corner.
*They insist on calling their drinks not by small, medium and large but by some other standard that involves "vente"
*Their coffee tastes like crap.

There are two more reasons:
*They acquiesced to Baylor University's request to remove cups with a quote from a gay author

*To make up for it, what do they fucking do?
They put a "god filled" quote in their next rotation. If you allowed both I could understand your decision, but no you instead kowtow to the "faithful" by pulling the quote about coming out and adding a bible quote to the next series.

Starbucks I'm voting with my wallet on this one and you will never see another cent from my disposable income as I take my coffee black with no room for homophobia or faith.

New Apple Crap

Since everyone else is doing I figure I'll chime in on the Apple crap.

iPod video, eh, it was expected anyway and I don't find it all that exciting.

iTunes selling ABC shows. This is the one thing I find the most interesting. It this will strike a raw nerve with the cable and satellite companies and the cable networks. The reason it will do so is two fold. First this is "a la carte" programming that everyone has been clamoring for. If this expands to HBO, Comedy Central and the like, get ready to dump your stock.
Sure there is a one day delay but with the advent of Tivo no one watches shows live anymore anyway. Add in the fact that one won't have to skip commercials or edit them out or (This is basically the same thing you'd get from Bittorrent except now it is legal and you save the hassle of finding the torrents, which is easily worth $2) Additionally, you can archive all of the shows and this will cut into the secondary revenue stream of buying shows when they are released to DVD and will cut into syndication profits as well, big money makers for the companies, especially since they are for the most part a lost cost, high profit revenue stream.

The new iMac, I think is a pretty cool idea a usable media hub for home, it even has a remote control, what they have missed though is that between and iMac or Mac mini there isn't something you'd plug into a high end audio system. With the mini there isn't digital sound and it has a slower processor. With the iMac there isn't DVI out and you need a place to you put your big ass 17 inch box. (Also does the iMac support non-mirroring mode and/or support HD type resolutions?) Yes I know you can do this with a PowerMac, and that since you are talking high end anyway it seems to fit (price-wise) but I've heard several complaints about how loud those fuckers can be and hence a bit of a bummer to have in the entertainment room. My only hope is that the next generation mini has the same combo audio out that the Airport express has as well as G5 (or Intel processor) and lastly to make all of this work 5.1 (at least) sound and HD resolution from the shows you've picked up from iTunes.

New Reviews

I'm seventh eights of the way through "Stranger Than Fiction : True Stories" and like all of the rest of Palahniuk's work this doesn't disappoint, I'm wiling to say that pretty much everything this guy writes is kick ass. "Invisible Monsters" is my current favorite, but "Lullaby", "Choke" and "Survivor: A Novel" are stellar.

On the music scene I'm really feeling the new J-Live "The Hear After" is kick ass esp the tracks "Aaw Yeah," "Brooklyn Public Part 1" and "Listening (featuring Kola Rock)"

Look Deeper

Recently a lot of people have been happy over the rift that appears to be going on with in the Republican party. But I think perhaps we should look a little deeper, I think this is a play to be able to distance future Republicans from the worst president ever and while they are at it they will clean their house of people who have gotten too big for their britches and out of party control like, DeLay and Frist.

I May Not Be on the Daily Mailing List

I may not be on the daily mailing List but I am on still on the American Family Ass action alert list and today's is great.

The American Family Ass is pissed of because Target will be selling vibrators! Again this is something should be a victory for the American Family Ass, vibrators are a great way to promote abstinence, prevent the spread of disease and cut back on teen pregnancy and yet Donald E. Wildmon is asking "Please send an email asking Target to end ... their offering of a sex toy line of products."

Please Explain

I don't get it, how is overturning Roe v. Wade not judicial activism? Especially since the people who are complaining about "activist judges" are those most in favor of putting a judge on the bench who would change it.

Finally the k750i Post

Sony Ericsson k750i Review

A couple of months ago I bought a Sony Ericsson k750i from Expansys being it isn't not yet availble in the US you are warned that it comes with a UK power adapter, but the people at Expansys were nice enough to throw an adapter in the box that allows you use it stateside. So far my initial impression is pretty good, I got the phone Saturday afternoon waited a few hours for the battery to fully charge slipped in my SIM and began using it.

The first thing to mention it what I was looking for in a phone. I was hoping to find something that could reduce pocket clutter. I usually carry my iPod mini, a Cannon SD400 camera and my Nokia 6600 phone. Ideally I would be able to find a device that would a decent job at all three and from the specs and the reviews of the k750i it seemed to fit the bill. I'm going to break this down into four sections phone, camera, media player and the rest.

Phone

I've had several Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones over the last few years and I've learned what to expect from each company. A few of the things that encouraged me to switch away from the SE's a while back were that the T68i and T610 were a tad slow at times, there weren't a lot of cool programs for them (for example an ssh client (there is one for the k750!) or an IM client (this is now handled well via T-Mobile for AIM atleast which is what I use)) and the reception was horrible. There were also several things I liked about SE's that I in the past, the user interface, form factor.

From what I've seen from my own use the reception still isn't nearly as a strong as that of my Nokia 6600, but it is almost usable from inside the confines of my Faraday cage like condo. Incidentally T-Mobile has put a cool coverage tool on their site Otherwise the phone works as you would expect a phone to, the handset has clear sound and people didn't complain that I sounded strange. The sound is really good when using the headset attachment and the speakerphone is also decent. No complaints here. MMS and SMS text work fine, you can get the configurations sent you phone from the T-Mobile site.

Camera

While there is no way that the camera on the this phone comes close the quality of the Canon SD400, it does a damn good job. I really like way that it is activated by opening the slider door, which does a good job of protecting the lens from scratches and dust. It does have some features that I haven't seen on camera phones before, first off it focuses and even has a macro focus mode. It also has several different lighting settings and tags the images with EXIF data. Though from the some of the pictures I saw they still show a bit of the camera phone feel and don't work for shit in darker settings (they have the little line things that cut through the picture.

Media Player

The media player is what make this phone as far as I am concerned, while it doesn't have the space of an ipod mini, it is shorter and thinner and has a color screen (though I guess the nano beats it on that aspect now, but the nano-isn't a phone nor does it have a camera) The "media player" can either be controlled via the menu or even when the keypad is locked you can use the side button to play and and pause, and use the volume rocker to adjust the volume or hold down to navigate the tracks. In addition it can also play 3gp movies and you can use the tools available for PSPs to make movies that will be playable on the phone, the screen is very sharp and video actually looks good on it. Examples from the camera here

Overall

Overall I'm pretty happy with the phone, it syncs with my PowerBook it can go a day or two without a charge, and I don't need to carry around three things all of the time. The games on it are a pretty fun (especially if you get the ones for the w800 as well [which by the way the phones have the same "guts" just different casings]) The camera supports EXIF data so that importing into iPhoto is actually useful, though it doesn't have the smarts to do the thing where it knows which way you were holding the camera so you'll have to manually rotate the images. Also if you are a Mac user you need to apply the patch so that you don't get a kernel panic when you disconnect the phone from the USB connection (which by the way charges the phone and gives you access to the memory card, but not the phone's internal memory, but you can browse the phone's memory via bluetooth) I suggest picking up a larger memory stick and getting the HPM-70 so that you can use different headphones (the ones attached to the headset that come with the phone are a bit large, though sound fine) If you have any questions or comments leave a message below and I will try to get back to you on it.

I Thought It Was About WMDs

Par for the Course

I will not convene an accountability board to judge the performances of any individual CIA officers," Goss said in a statement released to reporters Wednesday.
[sarcasm] I'm glad to see that Porter Goss is towing the Addict's Administration line of not being accountable for anything. It is good to see he isn't playing the "blame game." I'm sure some how it is the somehow fault of state and local officials. Next up how are we going to get Haliburton a no bid contract on the rebuilding of WTC site?[/sarcasm]

Unsubcribe

I unsubscribed from the American Family Ass email list today, after several months of reading the babbling fundamentalist jack asses I've finally had enough, I was hoping at least they would have a sane and rational defense of their points but all I've read is mean spiritedness, coupled with blind faith, an unwillingness to consider the thoughts others, a large dose of ignorance and lately a level of revenge and fire and brimstone version of the world of make believe in which these people live that is just too much to handle. The lead today in which James Dobson, herds his sheep to "trust" in Bush put me over the top, I don't think it necessary to enumerate the many reasons why the Addict (Bush) should be trusted _EVER_. Anyway the level of frustration and more so the fact that these people have the ear of the Addicts administration scares the shit of out me. The nomination of the second religious fundamentalist to the Supreme Court, is scary enough, come 2008 if these nut jobs still manage to keep control of the government, I think it will be time for me to move on. I guess its a good thing that I work close to embassy row. I may have to start shopping around, because I think it best leave Rome before it's decline is in full swing.

Hydrant Revenge

I had an exciting morning, first I saw a tiny little tombstone, then I went to Murky Coffee and on my way home I saw this hydrant daring a dog to pee on it only so it could pee back. The most exciting part of my morning though was woman with a Dalmatian who was very excited to see another dog and was basically trying to drag her towards it she was screaming "S-I-T" over and over to no avail, it think she was pretty relieved when the other dog was out of site.

Women of Indiana Your Bodies Are No Longer Yours to Control

Wow, I can't believe legislation like this is even considered here in the US let alone introduced. Unauthorized Reproduction bill has been drafted as Boing Boing points out this would have made the Virgin Mary a criminal.
