New Apple Crap

Since everyone else is doing I figure I'll chime in on the Apple crap.

iPod video, eh, it was expected anyway and I don't find it all that exciting.

iTunes selling ABC shows. This is the one thing I find the most interesting. It this will strike a raw nerve with the cable and satellite companies and the cable networks. The reason it will do so is two fold. First this is "a la carte" programming that everyone has been clamoring for. If this expands to HBO, Comedy Central and the like, get ready to dump your stock.
Sure there is a one day delay but with the advent of Tivo no one watches shows live anymore anyway. Add in the fact that one won't have to skip commercials or edit them out or (This is basically the same thing you'd get from Bittorrent except now it is legal and you save the hassle of finding the torrents, which is easily worth $2) Additionally, you can archive all of the shows and this will cut into the secondary revenue stream of buying shows when they are released to DVD and will cut into syndication profits as well, big money makers for the companies, especially since they are for the most part a lost cost, high profit revenue stream.

The new iMac, I think is a pretty cool idea a usable media hub for home, it even has a remote control, what they have missed though is that between and iMac or Mac mini there isn't something you'd plug into a high end audio system. With the mini there isn't digital sound and it has a slower processor. With the iMac there isn't DVI out and you need a place to you put your big ass 17 inch box. (Also does the iMac support non-mirroring mode and/or support HD type resolutions?) Yes I know you can do this with a PowerMac, and that since you are talking high end anyway it seems to fit (price-wise) but I've heard several complaints about how loud those fuckers can be and hence a bit of a bummer to have in the entertainment room. My only hope is that the next generation mini has the same combo audio out that the Airport express has as well as G5 (or Intel processor) and lastly to make all of this work 5.1 (at least) sound and HD resolution from the shows you've picked up from iTunes.

the tricky part is the DRM that APPL puts into the iTunes/QT video...
